Celebration Planned In Evansville
EVANSVILLE, Wis. - Sept. 26, 2007 – Everything’s
coming up soybeans in
Evansville, Wis., as the city prepares to observe a week-long
celebration of the state’s
miraculous, yellow oilseed crop October 15-20.
Officially the "Evansville Soybean Celebration"
commences at 9 a.m., Monday, October
15, with the reading of the Governor's Proclamation declaring
Evansville Soybean
Capital of Wisconsin. Events run throughout the week as
local schools participate in
several "soy-centric" events.
Family and Consumer Education classes at the middle school
and high school levels will
cook soybean specialties. Students then will compile a cookbook
of their recipes and
compete for prizes in a weekend soybean cook-off. Art students
can enter an "Art
Extravaganza" and, using Prang Soybean Crayons compete
for prizes in three divisions:
Grades 3-5; 6-8, and; grades 9-12.
Evansville science classes will conduct age-appropriate
lessons and classroom
experiments based on activities in the Wisconsin Soybean
Kit for elementary classes and
the Bio-diesel Kit at the high school level. Both sets of
kits were donated by the
Wisconsin Soybean Association, a major sponsor of this event.
Evansville's Soybean Festival culminates Saturday, October
20 with a day of free
festivities, food, facility tours and fun for visitors of
all ages. Based at Evansville high
school from10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the local high school,
events include business displays, a
wide variety of free soybean food samples, the soybean cook-off,
a professional cooking
demonstration, appearance by Wisconsin's “Alice In
Dairyland “ and a live remote
broadcast by local radio station WJVL. A miniature soybean
farm and train will be on
display along with full-sized farming equipment from nearby
John Deere and Case
dealerships.
Festival goers can board buses for tours of soybean operations
at The Delong Co., and
Landmark Services Cooperative. The bus tours will run at
11 a.m. and noon and also will
provide a first-hand view of construction progress at the
North Prairie Productions
Biodiesel Plant and watch a soybean field being harvested.
Tickets are required for these
tours and will be available at the door.
Presiding over the week's events are King and Queen, Corvan
and Joanne
Neuenschwander, members of the local FFA Alumni Association.
You’re also likely to
see city's official soybean mascot, affectionately named
Soyer by a local first grade class,
at many of the week's event. Soyer's costume was designed
and constructed by a local
seamstress and proved to be a big hit during the Evansville
4th of July Parade.
